The Medieval village still intact and well cared!
What to see in Scarlino
One of the Tuscan villages to visit near the Village Casa in Maremma is definitely the medieval village of Scarlino. It is a small village on the slopes of Mount Alma and is still characterized by being a small village intact, picturesque and well-groomed on which dominates the Castle, the beautiful Rocca Pisana. In this ancient seaside village there are several beauties to admire, the Archaeological Park in front of where you can observe the remains of walls of Hellenistic age are one of them.
Before we mentioned the 13th-century Rocca Pisana is another example of the beauties of this perfectly preserved territory, in which in summer they organize small events. There should be a view of the Church of St. Martin whose bell bears the date of 1340, the Garibaldi Square whose monument of the 90s occupies the center of the square, the beautiful Porta Senese, the Church of St. Donato dating back to the 13th century, a church with a cro plant and with a single nave that houses various works of sacred art. Visit maps (Portus Scabris Archaeological Museum) at the Puntone, the Necropolis of Poggio Tonfo in Pian d’Alma and the Etruscan Documentation Centre in the village.
Before descending from Scarlino you must absolutely admire and appreciate the beautiful views of the sea countryside, looking up to the sea, precisely to the sea overlooking the Gulf of Follonica!
Going down from the medieval village to the sea you get to the coast where, first, lush pine forests equipped, then the Tourist Port of the Puntone di Scarlino and finally the coasts with the beautiful beaches of Cala Civette and Cala Violina, give the environment a strong tourist footprint, a destination appreciated by those who are looking for a holiday made of recreation, shelter and tranquility.
Medieval tradition relives on the streets of Scarlino
Every year, on August 19th, the alleys are colored by ladies, knights, arrows and actors transforming the small village into a medieval open-air theater. Every corner of the village of Scarlino becomes a theatrical set catapulting it back in time. The 4 districts of Scarlino (Centro, Rocca and San Donato) compete for the “Carriere del 19” with a series of competitions: archery, historical parade, award for the best decoration and also with the costumed relay. This folkloric and popular tradition originates in a profound religious fact when in 1855 the cholera epidemic that ran out of the village suddenly ended. The Scarlines people interpreted this event as a kind of grace in response to the religious devotion shown by the entire population.

Fantastic
Stayed for 10 days in August, two adults and two teenagers. Used as a base to visit local areas and also Rome and Florence (3 hour drive). Basic accommodation but clean and comfortable. Spent days when at the village in the pool. Pool was everything you needed on scorching hot days…very clean and relaxed…swimming caps are essential and can be purchased at reception. Only ate once at the restuarant but was delicious. We were the only English family and the staff tried very hard to keep us included at all times. Evening entertainment was as expected…we saw bingo, made slightly harder by the translations, and an acrobatic display, which was entertaining despite a fall. Would recommend
Brilliant resort in the Tuscan countryside
Fantastic holiday in villa with excellent pool and on site services. Great staff, kids club, baker visiting every morning with lovely fresh bread, delicious food served in the restaurant on site. Can’t recommend enough will be back for another holiday
perfect for a family holiday
We spent a lovely week enjoying the pool and the beautiful beach nearby (Cala Violina). Each bungalow is well equipped, clean and quite (and air conditioned). Lots of great places to visit in the area from Piombino to Massa Marittima to Castiglione della Pescaia. The staff was very professional and welcoming. Can’t wait to go back!
